Irresponsible role played by the media?

Baby dumping; One of the big factors that led to this is the role of media. How far media contributed much to this phenomenon of baby dumping in Malaysia?

The statement above is not taken from anybody on the earth. It is just a perception towards why do "dumpers" dumped their baby? Well, for sure, the above statement should come up in our mind, especially those social scientists whenever we take baby dumping as our research field. As being mentioned earlier, this research is focusing on 5 elements, by which 2 will touch on the research regarding how to stop dumping while the other 3 is focusing on why do they dumped.

Back to the statement above. It is really a challenge for me to reveal or to find whether the statement is true or not. Therefore, in order to get the findings of this research, myself interviewed one of the media scholar, Associate Professor Fuziah Kartini Hassan Basri, a lecturer from The School of Media and Communication, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, The National University of Malaysia. The interview was held on Friday, 18th March 2011.

When Assoc.Prof Fuziah Kartini being asked regarding the media being pointed out to be the cause of baby dumping, she has her own strong and unbeatable answers. She regarded the fact that media caused baby dumping as something ridiculous and asked back “how can the media contributed much to this phenomenon?”.

As far as she knows, as a media scholar, media is the government’s partner to bring development and serve awareness to the people. At the same time, the media here in Malaysia are producing and reporting based on the policies of the government. If the media produced a film for instance regarding ‘free sex’ for sure, the government, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, will not allowed such movie to be produced here in Malaysia. However, blogs are the medium of media that is uncontrollable. But still, people cannot come up with one fact or conclusion that media caused the phenomenon of baby dumping. It is a ridiculous fact. 

Therefore, who to blame? The audiences or the people are to be blame. Media have to present what is happening around the society, therefore it is up to the audiences to choose what to watch, what to see, what to listen and what to read!
